Heat Advisory - Advertencia de Calor

Dear Lawndale Family,

As our community is experiencing high temperatures this week, Lawndale Elementary School District is implementing heat protocols to help ensure that our students, staff and schools remain as cool as possible.

  • All students and staff should be in air-conditioned or shaded areas as much as possible.
  • Avoid strenuous activities and drink water throughout the day.
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and wear sunscreen.
  • Students should immediately tell their teacher or another adult if they feel ill due to the heat.

Thank you for your continued support, and try to stay cool!

FDR Elementary Participates in Trash Free Lunch Challenge

We are excited to announce that FDR Elementary is one of the 22 schools in California that will participate in this year's Grades of Green Trash Free Lunch Challenge. Read below for more information.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! CELEBRATED WASTE REDUCTION CONTEST KICKS-OFF FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR

22 So Cal Schools will reduce over 300 tons of trash in Grades of Green’s7th Annual Trash Free Lunch Challenge

WHITTIER, Calif., October 9th, 2017 - When it comes to lunchtime trash, less is definitely more. That’s the lesson environmental education nonprofit Grades of Green wants to teach students as the organization kicks off its seventh annual Trash Free Lunch Challenge (TFLC).

Students from participating schools will learn how to decrease waste by packing trash-free lunches (such as reusable lunch containers, water bottles and utensils, and cloth napkins). All students, including those who buy lunch, will also learn how to sort lunchtime waste to be donated, composted and recycled.

Through a combination of sorting waste and bringing reusable lunch containers, TFLC schools reduce an average of 70 percent of lunchtime waste; winning schools reduce over 92 percent of trash. In total, 117 schools have diverted 2,300 tons of waste from the landfill since the Challenge began seven years ago. This year, Challenge participants are on track to reduce at least 300 tons!

While these metrics speak to the program’s success in helping schools protect our environment and divert waste, the real results are the environmental values students take home. “The goal of the Trash Free Lunch Challenge is not only to reduce waste but also to teach children how to reuse, recycle and compost. Educating students through programs such as these furthers our mission of converting waste into resources in the communities we serve,” said Grace Hyde, Sanitation Districts’ Chief Engineer and General Manager.

“Grades of Green’s goal with our Trash Free Lunch Challenge is to help participating schools start lasting green programs to instill environmental and waste reduction habits that will stay with students for a lifetime,” said Allie Bussjaeger, Director of Regional Programs at Grades of Green. “We are changing the course of the future by making environmental protection second nature in young minds today.”

WHAT IS GRADES OF GREEN’S TRASH FREE LUNCH CHALLENGE?

Grades of Green's Trash Free Lunch Challenge is a yearlong competition where Southern California schools challenge each other to see which school can reduce the most lunchtime waste. Grades of Green teaches students to reduce trash by bringing reusable lunch containers and using lunchtime waste sorting systems. This ultimately forms habits that will protect the environment for years to come. Through fun, educational assemblies, personalized eco-starter kits, waste reduction plans, and Grades of Green Advisors available to personally guide each school, Grades of Green helps create an environment where every school can be a winner! A panel of environmental experts will evaluate the implementation and success of the three finalists’ trash reduction programs. The winning schools (one elementary and one middle school) will receive a Grand Prize of a $1,000 education grant.

Information Regarding Creepy Clowns on Social Media

You are probably aware by now about the Creepy/Killer Clown phenomenon that is taking over social media.  It started in the rural south in August and has now spread nationwide--and will more than likely be around until Halloween.

Many of our students and families have seen news about sightings, school closures, and threats.  Although it is a joke/hoax this is scaring a lot of children.

September Newsletter 2014

Principal's Message

Dear FDR Families,

I want to welcome you to FDR.  It is going to be a very exciting year as we start to combine our two schools together.   We will have opportunities for you to participate in school wide events and we encourage you to attend our Fun Friday Community Gatherings the first Friday of every month.   Our newsletter will have important dates and things to know so please take the time to read the information so you are informed.

By October, our information packets will be sent to you online on Wednesdays.   A phone message will be sent to remind you to check your e-mail or to go to our website to get the latest information.

As we move into this new school year, I highly encourage you to connect with your child’s teacher early on if you have any questions or concerns.  Our goal at FDR is to ensure every child is safe and are being supported to achieve academic excellence.   Your support will help us reach our goal.  I look forward to meeting you at our Back-to-School night and at our Fun Friday events.

Sincerely,

Dr. Appell

Principal

Welcome our new Assistant Principal

We are happy to welcome Mrs. Ashton who is coming from LAUSD.  She was a teacher for many years and has a wealth of knowledge that will really help support our families and staff.  You will have an opportunity to meet her at our Back To School Night and at our Fun Fridays.

RAP News

This is a friendly reminder of the RAP dismissal time and locations. The RAP program operates Monday –Friday and dismisses at 5:45pm, every day. Students on scholarship must attend daily and remain for the entire duration of program. If you need to pick up your child before 5:45pm, please call (310)973-1300 ext. 57243. The RAP dismissal area is as follows: FDR- Please enter through Marine Ave., in the staff parking lot. Kit Carson- Please enter through Cerise Ave., in the staff parking lot. There is a bell located at each gate with a sign that reads, “RING FOR R.A.P”, please ring the bell for service. RAP students are NOT dismissed through the main office. We look forward to a wonderful year!

Thank You,

Elena Rodriguez

R.A.P Supervisor

Arrival and Dismissal

If you have students at Carson and at FDR 3-5, your Carson student will stay at Carson and wait for their FDR sibling.  You will be able to pick both students up at Carson if they are not walking home. Please inform Carson if your child will be waiting for their FDR sibling.

I know how congested Yukon is before and after school. I would highly recommend that you walk your child to school.  This will decrease the traffic and make it much more pleasant for you. If you must drop off your child by car, the best time to do this is from 8:00 AM- 8:10 AM or at 8:25 AM.  Please remember that once the 8:30 AM bell rings, Gate V at Carson and Gate C  at FDR will be closed and your child will need to enter through the office and receive a tardy slip.

Dismissal is another congested time.  I also recommend that you walk to school to pick up your child.  The busiest time is from 2:30 PM – 2:45 PM.  We have both schools dismissing students at the same time.  If you have a 3rd grade student and an upper grade student please pick up both students at 2:55 PM by Gate C at FDR.  We can no longer pay for after school supervision so please pick up your child by 2:45 PM at Carson and by 3:15 PM at FDR.

News to Know

At FDR, we follow our district wellness policy.  Please see the district handbook for more information.  This includes no longer having birthday parties at school.  Therefore, parents should not send party favors, balloons, birthday cakes or food to the classroom.  Invitations to a home party should be mailed to your children’s friends and not distributed at school.

Please purchase a Birthday Book to honor your child on his or her birthday. You may dedicate the book to the class and have your child sign the book.   If you would like to know which book to purchase, please contact your child’s teacher and he/she will suggest possible titles.  The book will remain in the classroom library to honor your child for years to come.
